Posting on social media can be fun in the moment: a quick photo, a hot take, a trending sound. You think once you tap, post, it's done, but in today's age, every post lives forever. So before you hit "post," we have to be intentional.
Here are 5 things I learned in my social media posts that I'd do differently if I could go back:
1. Digital Footprint
I would pause before posting. Knowing what I post can come back to haunt me later. In today's world, brands, schools, future employers, and even your future self will scroll back to see who you were or who you are, because social media acts like a time capsule and speaks on your character. Ask myself, "Would I be proud if this were the first thing someone saw about me?"
2. Impact vs Effect
I would also limit my public rants and think about whether the effect will be temporary. Is my post worth all the likes, views, and laughs for 24 hours? Consider the lasting impact on others and ensure you can handle their comebacks, whether through stitches, comments, or DMs. Did my post encourage someone, teach something, or start a good conversation? It's better to chase impact, not just reactions.I'd also do weekly digital detoxes and make time to spend outdoors, like going to the beach or a park, to relax my mind.
3. Influence vs Affluence
I would stop comparing highlight reels, and I'd learn that affluence is showing what I have, like my car, the trip, and the flex, and knowing influence is showing who you are, like your values, your voice, and what you stand for. One gets attention while the other earns respect.
4. Praise vs Criticism
Learn that not every post needs to go viral, and not every comment deserves a reply, because if I post for praise, the criticism will break me, and if I post with purpose, both praise and criticism can't surprise me.
5. You / God's Approval
At the end of the day, the only 2 approvals that matter are yours and God's. Ask yourself, "Does this represent who I am? Does this align with what I believe?" If the answer is yes, post, but if not, delete and keep scrolling.
So at the end of social media is a microphone. It's all fun and great until it's not, and influence is our responsibility. The next generation is watching and copying us, so what impact do you want to leave with them? Post like the internet is listening, because it is.
