TikTok has evolved from a platform for trends into a powerful influence on what goes viral, what we buy, and the discussions we have. This became clear during the Trump administration's attempt to ban the app from 2020 to 2024, when the hashtag #SaveTikTok gained traction as creators worldwide and users expressed concern for their livelihoods. TikTok has proven to be an essential part of our social infrastructure for fun, therapy, advice, direction, validation, and more.

4 Reasons TikTok remains the strong platform that it is:

1. Algorithm

If you have followers, that's not a problem because TikTok's For You Page pushes content based on interest, not who you follow. That means anyone can go viral on day 1. No other platform gives new creators reach this fast.

2. The TikTok Monetization vs. YouTube Monetization

While YouTube requires creators to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours to be eligible for monetization, TikTok allows users to earn money much more quickly through other options. The earning opportunities include earnings from the Creativity Program, TikTok Shop, gifts from TikTok LIVE, and brand deals. Additionally, TikTok lets you sell directly in the app, so you can convert your views into sales with a single tap. For most new creators, TikTok offers a faster path to earning money.

3. Cultural Influence and a New Search Engine

TikTok doesn't just follow trends; it creates them. Anything like a product, sound, or idea can go global in 48 hours. In addition, people relate better to real experiences and raw information on the platform. For example, Gen Z isn't Googling "how to" or "best of" anymore; they're searching TikTok for real people showing real answers.

4. Proximity To Professionals + Companies

When using TikTok, you are in direct contact with brands, founders, and recruiters you want to work with. You can tag them, stitch their content, and pitch your services or a job opportunity in a video, in the comments, or in their DMs. The users are not always gatekeeping. Cold emails are no longer the only way to send 15-second pitches.

TikTok is the most powerful social media platform to date because it's the fastest way to get seen, get paid, get hired, and shape what the world talks about. It's a platform most, if not all, of us can relate to and find ourselves doomscrolling on to pass the time.
