Finding God in Small Things

A 7-Day Gratitude Practice

Admit it, we're always waiting for the big moments, the answered prayer, a breakthrough, or a sign in the sky to acknowledge and show gratitude to God. But what if God has been in the small things all along? In the deep breaths you took this morning. In the friend who texted, "thinking of you,” in the feeling, you get 5 minutes before leaving your house. The problem isn't that God isn't there. The problem is we're moving too fast to notice.

This 7-day practice is an invitation to slow down. No perfect prayers. No spiritual performance, no excuses. Just 5 minutes a day to notice where God is already showing up. You only need a notebook and a willing heart. Let's begin!

Day 1: God in the Ordinary

Notice Your "Daily Bread": I used to pray for big things and miss the small ones. Then one morning, my power was out. No coffee. No music. Just silence. In that silence, I realized that I had a bed. I have water, and I have breath, and that was my "daily bread" too. Jesus taught us to pray "Give us this day our daily bread" for this very reason. God meets us in ordinary things every day, not just on Sundays. What are 3 ordinary things today that are actually gifts? Your hot shower. The text that made you smile. The fact that your car started today.

Day 2: God in People

See His Hands Through Others. We call them "coincidences," but what if they're God? The coworker who brought you lunch when you were overwhelmed. The stranger who let you go first in line. The money you found while randomly walking in the street, and the message that came right when you needed it. "Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up," 1 Thessalonians 5:11. God often shows up wearing someone else's face. Say to God, "Thank You for the people who reflect You to me. Help me be that person for someone else."

Day 3: God in Nature

Look up "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands," Psalm 19:1. I forget this until I'm forced to. Today, step outside for 5 minutes. No phone. Count 5 things like the way leaves move, a cloud, the direction the wind blows, and the temperature on your skin. That's not just nature. That's worship. What made you pause today? Take a photo of one small thing outside and write "God made this" under it.

4: God in Hard Things

Gratitude in the Middle "Consider it pure joy when you face trials... because the testing of your faith produces perseverance." - James 1:2-3 This one is hard, I know. Gratitude here doesn't mean "I'm glad this happened." It means, ‘God, show me what good You can bring it from this." What's one hard thing right now? What is it teaching you or revealing? Write this sentence: "This is hard, but I'm grateful for ___ in it." Pray and say to God, "I don't understand this. But I trust you're with me in it. Show me your good work."

Day 5: God in Your Body.

Your body is a temple in the sight of God. Today, your lungs breathe without you having to ask. Your heart beats 100,000 times. Your eyes read these words. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made," Psalm 139:14. What does your body let you do that you take for granted? Stretch for 1 minute. With each stretch, say "Thank You" for that part. Pray to God and say, "God, thank You for this body. Help me treat it with care, because you made it."

Day 6: God in the Waiting.

But what if it's full? " Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength," Isaiah 40:31. God often does His deepest work when nothing seems to be happening. Where are you waiting right now? What is one good thing in this season of waiting? Sit in silence for 3 minutes. No fixing. No scrolling. Just be with God. Pray to God and say, "God, teach me to wait well. Don't let me miss you while I'm waiting.”

Day 7: God in Everything.

Look Back to Look Forward. We started by looking for God in small things. Now look back at your week. Where did you see Him the most? In a person? In nature? In peace? "Give thanks in all circumstances." - 1 Thessalonians 5:18. List 7 things you're grateful for this week. Write them on slips of paper and put them in a jar. Read them when you forget. Pray and say, "God, you were here all week. In big ways and small. Thank you for not leaving me.

So what now? Your 7 days are just the start. The goal isn't to "finish" gratitude. The goal is to live with open eyes.

Try this:

Every night, write down 1 small thing.

"God was in my house today."

"God was in that conversation."

Over time, you'll have proof that He never left. He's in the big and small things.

And the small things are enough too. Want to keep going?

Save this post and come back to it each week.

Share it with a friend and spend the 7 days together. Which day spoke to you the most? Tell me in the comments below.
